Actually: running is a complex skill — coordination, motor planning, agility — that's routinely dismissed as "done" at acquire. For kids, learning good technique matters more than running at top speed, and teaching it early stops bad habits before they set.

Efficient running is tall posture, driving knees, quick light turnover, and arms swinging front-to-back — powerful, relaxed, no wasted motion. It's the base under every running sport.
The technique — the money cues
Posture, then arms, then feet.
The rate-limiters (fix in order)
1. Posture — running tall vs. "sitting" (hips low/back). The master gate; fix it and several errors shrink on their own. 2. Reciprocal arm action — arm–leg opposition, off the midline (the run's "opposite foot"). 3. Foot placement / turnover — land under the hips, quick and quiet.

Readiness & the bright line
Technique over speed. Play over drills.
- Coach form, not top speed — one cue at a time, inside a game. Never a stopwatch grind.
- No speed-endurance, timed distances, or high mileage for young kids (growth-plate / apophyseal overuse risk). Stop on pain.
- Don't force a heel-vs-forefoot conversion — landing under the hips matters far more than the strike debate.
- Raw speed is maturation-gated. Adolescent speed/power arrives around peak height velocity (~13–16). A flawless 8-year-old won't have adolescent speed — and that's fine; you're banking clean mechanics.
